Why is my laptop so slow? 7 fixes that actually work

A slow laptop is one of the most common things we’re asked about — and the good news is it’s usually fixable without buying a new machine. Here are seven things that genuinely make a difference, roughly in the order worth trying.

1. Too many startup programs

Apps that launch with Windows quietly eat memory. Turn off the ones you don’t need (Task Manager → Startup) and your laptop will boot and feel faster.

2. A nearly-full hard drive

When storage is almost full, everything slows down. Clear out old downloads, large videos and unused apps, and aim to keep some free space.

3. Malware or junk software

Viruses, adware and “speed-up” toolbars do the opposite of what they promise. A proper malware scan and clean-up often restores a lot of speed.

4. You’re still on a spinning hard drive

This is the big one. If your laptop still has an old mechanical hard drive (HDD), swapping it for an SSD is the single most effective upgrade — boot times and app loading can feel like a new machine for a modest cost.

5. Not enough memory (RAM)

If you keep lots of browser tabs and apps open, more RAM helps the laptop multitask without grinding. On many laptops it’s a cheap, quick upgrade.

6. Overheating

Dust-clogged fans cause the laptop to throttle its own speed to stay cool. A clean-out and fresh thermal paste can bring performance back.

7. An old, cluttered operating system

Years of updates and leftover software add up. Sometimes a clean reinstall is the fastest way to a responsive laptop.
