If your PlayStation 5 sits on a blinking blue light and then shuts off without ever reaching the home screen, you’ve hit what gamers nicknamed the “blue light of death.” It’s frustrating, but it’s usually fixable. Here’s what’s going on and what to do.
The blue light is the PS5 trying to start up and output a picture. If it pulses and then powers down, the console either isn’t communicating with your TV or has an internal fault it can’t get past. It is not a single error — it’s a symptom with a few common causes.
HDMI problems. A loose, dirty or damaged HDMI cable or port is the number-one cause. The PS5’s HDMI port is delicate and easily bent if a cable is knocked.
Power delivery. A failing power supply can stop the console completing boot.
Software/storage. A corrupted system file or a problem with the internal SSD can interrupt start-up.
Try a different HDMI cable and a different HDMI port on your TV. Reseat the cable firmly at both ends. Then try Safe Mode: hold the power button until you hear a second beep, connect a controller by cable, and choose options like “rebuild database.” If Safe Mode won’t display either, the issue is more likely hardware.
If safe mode won’t show, or the picture is gone entirely, the HDMI port is the usual culprit — and it’s a repair best done with proper tools rather than DIY, as it sits on the mainboard. A professional HDMI port repair restores the picture without you needing a new console.
